Delhi, the capital of India possesses the most central geographical position due to it's close up situation from all important parts and cities of the country. The city is situated on the western bank of Jamuna river and the other side is protected by the Ridge (Delhi Ridge is a wildlife corridor - 1.5 billion years old). Thus Delhi holds a supreme strategic location in the country.
Delhi had been capital since long under several rulers due to its central and strategic location. By 1911, Calcutta (Now Kolkata ) was the capital of British India, but in 1911 British India decided to make Delhi as Capital.
Delhi is the most important Railway centre , it is the headquar3ters of Northern Zone of Indian Railway.
Delhi has two modern airports of Palem(Now Indira Gandhi International Airport) and Safdarjung which connect Delhi with important centres of the world as well as India. The Palem airport was renamed to Indira Gandhi International Airport on 2nd May,1986.
Why Palem Airport is named as Indira Gandhi International Airport?
Palem airport is the busiest airport in Delhi. There had been increasing the passengers count in 1980s so an additional terminal with nearly four times the area of old palem terminal was constructed. With the inauguration of this new terminal i.e Terminal 2 on 2nd May 1986 , the airport was rename as Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
