VOL. 1, ISSUE 1 | A TRIBUTE TO A VISIONARY INSTITUTION
A Legacy of Pioneering Excellence
How Prof. G. Ramakrishnan built SVUCE from the ground up, shaping not just a college, but the future of engineering education in India.

The iconic SVUCE building today, a symbol of enduring academic excellence in Tirupati.
Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering (SVUCE) is more than just an institution; it's a testament to the singular vision of its founding Special Officer and longest-serving Principal, Prof. G. Ramakrishnan. From the moment he was appointed, when the college was merely an idea on earmarked land, Prof. Ramakrishnan poured his life into its creation. His dedication was so absolute that it was said the very "college walls would echo back Ramakrishnan when tapped."
A Trailblazer in Education
Under Prof. Ramakrishnan's audacious leadership, SVUCE became a crucible of academic innovation. Long before it was the national standard, the college was the first in India to introduce several groundbreaking reforms that would later be adopted by premier institutions like the IITs and RECs.
- 1966: Introduced the metric system.
- 1968: Implemented the semester system.
- 1973: Adopted a flexible credit system, mirroring the top colleges in the United States.
He also pioneered the concept of 100% internal assessment, a progressive step that empowered both students and faculty, fostering a more dynamic learning environment.

"His students must be gentlemen and engineers. It was not enough if they become engineers alone."

More Than a Principal: A Guardian
Prof. Ramakrishnan's commitment extended far beyond academics. He was a guardian to his students, deeply invested in their welfare and character. He made surprise visits to the mess to check food quality, personally resolved student conflicts, and ensured scholarships reached the underprivileged without hassle. His faith in his students was immense, and he was fiercely protective, demanding both discipline and integrity.
He was instrumental in establishing holistic facilities, including a 24-hour reading room, an Andhra Bank branch on campus, and chapters of the NCC, NSS, and WUS. This comprehensive approach, born from his experiences in the USA, was designed to nurture well-rounded individuals. The presence of luminaries like Sri Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to address the students further cemented the college's growing prestige.
