Tips and Guidelines to grow green chillies at home...

  1. Choose a location: Chilies need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, so choose a spot in your garden or on your balcony that gets plenty of sun.

  2. Prepare the soil: Chilies prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 6.0. You can amend the soil with compost or other organic matter to improve its fertility.

  3. Start seedlings indoors: Chilies can be started from seed indoors, about 8-10 weeks before the last frost in your area. Fill seed trays or small pots with seed compost and sow the chili seeds on the surface. Cover them with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Keep the trays or pots in a propagator or cover with a plastic bag until germination, which usually takes around 7-14 days.

  4. Transplant seedlings: Once the seedlings have 2-3 leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots or into the ground. Space them 30-45cm apart, depending on the variety.

  5. Water and fertilize: Water the chilies regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize them every 2-4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

  6. Provide support: As the chilies grow, they may need support to keep them from falling over. Staking or tying the plants to a support is usually sufficient.

  7. Pinching out: Pinch out the growing tips of the main stem when the plants are about 15-20cm tall to encourage bushier growth and more fruits.

  8. Harvesting: Chilies can be harvested when they are green or when they turn red, depending on the variety and your preference. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut the fruit from the plant, leaving a small piece of stem attached.

Note:

  • Check the variety before you start as it is important to know the time to maturity before you start planting.
  • Be Careful while handling chilies as they are hot and spicy and can cause burning or itching sensation if touched.
  • Wearing gloves is recommended
