Do you know why Pratapgad Fort is built? This Fort is built by Chhatrapati Shivaji in the year 1656. This place is chosen because of it's high altitude. It is built for Military purpose. Soldiers can observe all the city for any attacks. 


On this site Chhrapati Shivaji and Afzal Khan fought on 10 November 1659 and Shivaji won the battle. So this fort is significantly known as "Battle of Pratapgad". Pratapgad is divided into two parts namely, Machi (lower fort) and Balekilla (upper fort).

Machi - the extented part of the fort

Machi acts a second level of protection if the enemy enters into the main fort. This fort has total 7 lakes and wells so the soldiers have no problem of water. 



You can clearly observe in the image that the fort entrance is hidden with walls. This makes difficult for enemies to find entrance from long distance.

This Shivaji statue was built and innaugurated in the year 1963 by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at this site. One leg of the horse lifted in air indicating that Shivaji was injured in the battle ground but died in the battle ground.
